Due to its rich bird and plant life, 90 percent of the Rettbergsaue is a nature reserve. The remaining areas have been available to citizens for free for decades as a recreational space. Visitors can almost feel like they are by the sea. There is no road traffic on the island, and dogs are not allowed. This idyllic place with its white sandy beaches is particularly a great destination for parents with children. Camping enthusiasts will also find ideal conditions on the Rettbergsaue.

Currently, access via the Schiersteiner Bridge is no longer possible. The connecting path from Rettbergsaue Biebrich to Schierstein is also closed. Due to the restricted accessibility of the area, the passenger ferry "Tamara" has extended its operating hours www.tamara.rettbergsau.de

The two campsites are accessible on foot and by bicycle during official opening hours. A footbridge that hangs under the A643 motorway leads from the Rhine meadows in Wiesbaden-Biebrich over the Rettbergsaue to Mainz-Mombach. During the official opening hours of the city campsites, a route to the island can be used. 

The passenger ferry Tamara operates from Tuesday to Sunday to the island. 

The opening hours are
Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, and on public holidays as well as during the Hessian school holidays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Outside of opening hours, there is no longer any possibility to leave the premises.

In April and May as well as after the Hessian summer holidays, camping on the Aue is only permitted from Friday to Sunday. Holidays are excluded from this.
From June until the Hessian summer holidays, the maximum stay is five days.
During the Hessian summer holidays, camping is permitted without restrictions.

In general, all camping guests must register by email at least three days in advance at alex.grawitz@gmx.de .

On the day of arrival, guests must check in at the site no later than one hour before closing, presenting a valid passport, ID card, or student ID to the staff on site.

Youths (including groups) under 16 years old may only camp when accompanied by a legal guardian.
Youth aged 16 to 18 must present a consent form from their parents.
Larger youth groups will only be permitted if there is adequate supervision by responsible adults.

No supervision is provided at night.

The camping guests – especially the leaders of youth groups – are responsible for adhering to the house rules.

The use and camping on the recreational grounds is free of charge.
