Geheime Gärten Rolandswerth

Weingärtenstraße 2, 53424 Remagen-Rolandswerth

The Secret Gardens of Rolandswerth transform the historic Hentzen Park into an art project based on the thoughts of Novalis. Park benches, a plant tower, and an old greenhouse connect landscape, art, and ecological habitats.

The over 100-year-old Hentzenpark on the Rhine river was transformed in 2001, in the run-up to the 2000-year celebration of Remagen, by Caroline Bittermann & Peter Duka as part of the "Sculptures on the Rhine Remagen" project into the art project "secret gardens rolandswerth." The artist duo started from the idea that landscape and nature are perceived as images. The starting point for the redesign of the 19th-century gardens is the writings of Novalis (1772–1801). The letters N-O-V-A-L-I-S can be found on the park benches. Bats and wild bees are welcomed in the plant tower made of concrete designed by Bittermann & Duka. A documentation of the history of the area can be seen in the old greenhouse.
