Above Oberwesel, behind the slope edge, lies the Niederburger Heide. A part of the ten-hectare area is maintained as a biotope. Strollers and hikers enjoy the mix of plants that color the area beautifully. To preserve the diversity of flora and fauna, the heath is regularly cleared of bushes. This is mostly done by sheep that graze in the meadows and fields, sometimes it is also mulched with vehicles. Every square meter of the protected areas changes throughout the year, which is favored by the different soils (rock, stones, clay, sand).
