Roentgenhaus
Pfarrstr. 51, 56564 Neuwied
Abraham Roentgen came to Neuwied as a master carpenter, invited by Prince Friedrich Alexander of Wied, along with many other Herrnhut families. He first had a workshop opposite the current Roentgenhaus, which is no longer preserved.
He created elaborate furniture, boxes, and writing desks with many secret compartments for princely and royal houses. Even Queen Elizabeth had a Roentgen writing desk as her own. In 1763/64, Abraham Roentgen built a new, representative residence with a workshop in the Neoclassical style on Pfarrstraße.
His son David took over the company in 1772.
The Neoclassical burgher house, built from 1774 to 1776 on Pfarrstraße, served as the residence and workshop of the artist-carpenter David Roentgen (1747--1807) until 1794. Today, the house is privately owned. Elaborate furniture from both Roentgens is displayed at the Roentgen Museum (District Museum Neuwied).
