My sculpture "Bird" has emerged freely from thinking and feeling, respect for the nature of stone and the landscape. I did not start from "something," I did not "abstract." Because art and nature are two completely different things. The work usually begins for me quite calmly, but it soon culminates in a general chaos of inventions. Then follows the laborious phase of rebalancing everything and bringing it formally to rest, until in the end everything looks quite simple. Exaggerated, one could also say: failure is in reality the source of art.
At my age, terms like talent, style, consistency, experience, abstraction, realism, etc. are long outdated. Only art theorists still ride on that. (Rudi Scheuermann 18.03.1997)
