Burg Gutenfels
Burg Gutenfels 1, 56349 Kaub
Surrounded by vineyards, the castle hotel is located above Kaub.
The Gutenfels Castle in Kaub is considered a prime example of Staufer period castle construction and shapes the local landscape. The complex was built in 1222 by the Lords of Falkenstein-Münzenberg and served, along with the Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, to secure the Rhine customs in the area. The customs office from the 16th century has also been preserved in the town of Kaub. In 1504, the town and castle withstood a weeks-long siege by the troops of Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse. Presumably, it was only after that that the name “Gutenfels” became common for the castle.
Located near the Rhine Trail, the castle has been a castle hotel again since 2022, offering a stylish overnight accommodation.
For special occasions such as moonlight tours with wine tasting, the castle opens its gates to visitors. Tickets can be booked through Loreley Tourism.
